🎮 AI art & prompts for games, with SDXL: character art, game assets, environments

SDXL brings a new level of quality to image generation. At PicFinder we also make it incredibly easy to generate beautiful art with SDXL in literally seconds by simply typing in a prompt and exploring the results. But if you're not sure where to start, here are some example images and prompts to start you off on your creative journey.

All these examples are created by us at PicFinder and they are an accurate representation of what the model is capable of, and hopefully with examples and prompts, will help you advance on your genAI journey.

Some great things to know:

  • Character portraits, especially illustrated, animated, 3D renders work great

  • Environment art is stunning and quite flexible in style - especially with some prompt experimentation

  • Some items tends to generate busy images - so starting from an image is the best option here. This applies to small objects such as gems, fruits, etc.

All the links below lead to the prompts - you can generate more variants in each by simply scrolling.

Character concepts

Even if your game already has a series of beloved characters, there's always more to explore. You could test out new character models in your ad creatives, to see how new players respond to them. You could create mini-games which introduce new characters, add intros or cinematics between levels, or use original characters to advance a narrative and keep players engaged. Or you could simply be brainstorming character concepts for entirely new games, levels, or areas.

Whichever stage you're currently on, whether you're developing an existing game IP, expanding it, or creating one from scratch, using PicFinder to get new ideas or explore a concept can help you make significant progress quickly.

Here are some prompt examples to get you started, with a preview image for each. Click on the links below to generate more images in this style.

Game assets

Aren't there enough asset packs by now? Yes, but prefab assets don't follow your game's unique style and make players feel like they're replaying the same game over and over again. They reduce engagement, and simply don't bring out the best in your game.

But at the same time, why spend days reinventing the wheel? AI-based image generation is perfect for reimagining classics, such as typical in-game assets: shields, swords, gems, crows, coins, pies, books, coffee mugs, cupcakes. It doesn't matter if you're working on a match3 game with a fighting or a cooking based theme. You can still create original assets faster than ever and collaborate with your art team faster by using concrete examples you can generate instantly.

Environment concepts

New environments take a long time to sketch and build out. So making sure everyone is on the same page about what's being storyboarded and implemented is essential. Enter image generation. You can create environment concepts in a variety of art styles, and add the exact touches you'd like reflected, to make sure that your art team understands your vision. Or, as an artist, you can quickly create environment mockups for stakeholders, to save you hours of work on visual directions that might get rejected after a single review.

Here are some prompt examples for frequently used environment themes. Feel free to start from these or build your own world from scratch, all in a few minutes.
